Skip Scott has practiced as a commercial trial lawyer since 1987. He joined Diamond McCarthy Taylor Finley & Lee, L.L.P. as of counsel in September 2000. Prior to joining the firm, he practiced for six years with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher L.L.P. in Dallas, and for another seven years with Hughes & Luce L.L.P. in Dallas.
Skip Scott's areas of experience include a wide range of business and commercial litigation involving securities and fraud cases, oil and gas disputes, professional (accountants, director/officer) liability suits, environmental actions, and various real estate cases, business torts, and contract disputes with private and governmental entities, both domestically and abroad, and in both federal and state courts. Some of the representative matters in which he is or has been involved include:
- Lead trial counsel for plaintiffs in Hopwood reverse-discrimination case holding racial preferences unconstitutional.
- Resolution of $5 million federal district court judgment against the Philippine Government.
- Trial counsel for plaintiff in Texas state court suit resulting in Jury verdict for approximately $6 million for breach of natural gas contract and related business tort claims.
- Defense of natural gas gathering company against breach of contract and fraud claims in Texas state court.
- Defense of large regional bank holding company against $60 million securities fraud lawsuit in Oklahoma federal district court and United States Bankruptcy Court.
- Trial counsel for defendant in Texas state court defamation suit by medical doctor relating to industrial accident.
- Trial counsel for former executive obtaining successful Jury verdict in Dallas federal district court for unpaid bonus payments.
- Prosecution of a $5 million judgment in Dallas federal district court against a principal of a failed private trust company on RICO and state law claims.
Skip Scott received his B.S. degree from Texas A & M University in 1984, where he graduated cum laude and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. He received is J.D. degree from the University of Texas with honors in 1987. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Skip Scott also currently serves as Special U.S. Legal Counsel to the Office of the President for the Republic of the Philippines and as Special Advisor to the Secretary of Finance for the Republic of the Philippines.
